Oakland’s future is only as bright as that of its youth. We won’t reach our goals as a city unless we have an education system that prepares the next generation of Oakland residents to be responsible, conscientious and productive citizens. No one entity can accomplish this alone, which is why the Mayor of Oakland, the Superintendent of the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD), and the Dean of the Mills College School of Education formed the Oakland Education Cabinet (OEC) in the summer of 2011.
What We are About
The Oakland Education Cabinet is dedicated to developing citywide solutions for educational issues that threaten the growth of young people and the prospects for this region. By providing intellectual leadership, raising public awareness, and building strong coalitions to confront the most critical challenges facing our community, the OEC will play a role in preparing children for academic, personal and professional success and readying Oakland for the rigors of the 21st century.
